Despite being an ancient building, dating from 1470 with several extensions over the years the Thompson family, owners and directors of Dornoch Castle have invested heavily in the property over the past 10 years and are now proud to announce that the Hotel has been awarded the Green Tourism Scheme Gold Award.
This award is one of only a handful in the Scottish Highlands and comes after several major sustainable tourism initiatives which are outlined below;
Our Biomass (solid log burning) Heat and Hot Water system, installed in December 2009 supplies 100% of the hot water and over 80% of space heating.
Designed and built by HDG BAVARIA in conjunction with Euroheat of Worcester and installed by CLH SOLAR of Muir of Ord this 250kw burner has enough capacity to cope with all proposed future development at the hotel. Heat is stored in 3 by 3500 litre heat dumps and then transferred via heat exchangers to link into the existing central heating systems as well as allowing us to upgrade pipe work, pumps, shower pressures and so on. It replaces approx £5000 of heating oil, £9000 of LPG and £12000 of electricity.
The cost of firewood is approx £12000, all per annum giving an approximate saving of £14000 per annum. The system is manually loaded with up to 250 kilos of wood per day, the burner heats water the heat stores and we find that one full burn per day in summer is sufficient, whilst 2 burns per day in winter. Carbon saving is over 100 tonnes per annum. Wood burned is mixture of larch and pine forestry waste and must be extremely dry. It is sourced locally from sustainable sources by Andy Stewart Forest and Estate Services of Embo, ph 01862811160.

We have planning permission for 20 square metres of Solar Panels and are currently looking at costs of installing Solar Photovoltic panels, more info to follow.
We have installed a water filtration and bottling plant in association with Pump Aid and Aqua Aid Sela V. This enables us offer all guests filtrated bottled still or sparkling water free of charge in both the Garden Restaurant and bedrooms.
All bottles are recyclable up to 100 times saving over 1 tonne per month of glass, plus all that is entailed in transport to and from the premise. Part of the ongoing monthly charge is sent to the charity, Pump Aid.
All lights in the premises are fitted with low energy bulbs as of December 2009, and hotel waste is recycled where possible. Cleaning materials are being changed over to Eco Friendly goods in mid 2010. Guests are advised of our Green Policy both on the website and on their welcome letter on arrival.
We go out of our way to source food items from local sustainable suppliers including;
We sell beers from several local Micro Breweries including Cairngorm Brewery, Aviemore; Orkney Brewery and Atlas Brewery, Kinlochleven. Wine is supplied by Inverarity Vaults of Biggar who source wine from small independent producers, many of whom specialise in Organic Wine.
